Born in South of France, photographer Lucie Rox grew up near Brittany before studying Literature & Arts in Paris and then moving to London where she started her career.
Her work, which goes across fashion, beauty, portraiture and landscape explores the basic photographic elements of light, shadows, colours and movement & how they can be stretched to a subtle level of abstraction, of surrealism. She deepens these explorations in the darkroom, where she crafts the deep and rich colours that are characteristic of her imagery and where she can experiment with image-making through painting, collages and other darkroom techniques.
Being a woman of African descent, Lucie’s work is evolving as is her own relationship to gender and race. Exploring black womanhood, identities of the diaspora and their visual representation are themes which are coming into focus through Lucie’s work.
In 2021, Lucie Rox self-published WATER••COLOUR, a personal project made in collaboration with make-up artist Crystabel Riley and partly inspired by the Black hybrid human-fish creatures of the mythology of electronic band Drexciya. In 2022, POWER, PAIN PRIVILEGE, a film she made in collaboration with musician Specimens and exploing biracial identity, premiered at the Southbank Centre.
Lucie’s work has also received gallery recognition & has been selected to be part of The New Black Vanguard exhibition at Aperture New York & the Sixteen Journal Retrospective at Oddity Paris in 2019. That year, she also self-published SIGNS, a collection of photographs shot in Japan.
